Temptation
Temptation was a game show broadcast on M-Net’s Open Time in 2006. The ultimate prize was a furnished house. The format pitted three contestants against each other and points could only be earned by buzzing in first with a correct answer. The contestant in the lead would be “tempted” with offers of sure-thing prizes in exchange for points. But giving up points, increased the risk of not winning the game. In the end, only the winning contestant was in the running for a bigger prize – think plasma screen TV, overseas holiday, his-and-hers wrist watches, a sportscar – at the end of the episode. That prize, again, could be foregone to play in the next episode against two new contestants for an even more tempting prize. Six wins in a row guaranteed the champion all the prizes she/he had been offered earlier and a spot to play in the final for that house.

Blitsbrein
Blitsbrein was a quick-on-the-buzzer game show on Afrikaans channel Via. The ultimate prize was R120,000. Three people answered general knowledge questions, stacking up points for correct answers and losing some for incorrect ones. The winner progressed to the next episode without any reward. At the end of the season the competitors with the highest scores were chosen to slug it out in semi-finals and three eventually progressed to the final. After an unbeaten run of six episodes, I lost narrowly against a serious quizzer in the final. Daan took home the R120,000.
Wie Word ‘n Miljoenêr
The Afrikaans installment of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? had its first season from late 2021 until early 2022. Hosted by Rian van Heerden, this version – like the original British format – had a ladder of 15 questions and sported the same three lifelines: Ask the Audience; Phone a Friend; and 50-50. And as always, contestants were free to walk away with the money they had already accumulated if they did not fancy the next question. The grand prize was R1000,000, not a fortune, but definitely worth playing for, if you have the fastest fingers and can get into the hotseat in the first place.
